A winner is you!

Hi everyone! The results are in, and the big winner of my autumn-themed giveaway is…

Lucky comment number 7 – LIZ! Liz’s favorite thing about autumn is “Afternoon walks with my Greyhound, underneath the beautiful blazing trees in my neighborhood, when it’s sunny but cool…

How lovely! Makes me want a doggie. :) Liz, I’ve e-mailed you with a request for your mailing address so I can send off your package. Congrats!

Thanks for playing, everyone! What with VeganMoFo on the horizon, I intend to do another giveaway in the not-too-distant future. :)

A Very Autumnal Giveaway

Look, I’m only a couple of days late in getting this post up! I promised you a giveaway, and a giveaway you shall receive.

Because fall has undeniably arrived here in the Midwest, I went with an autumnal theme for this giveaway. Check it out:

This could be yours!

The goods:

* Stash’s Pumpkin Spice decaf tea. Normally I don’t do decaf, but this flavor called to me in the store, and I couldn’t resist! Although it’s more “spice” than “pumpkin,” it’s still really quite tasty and perfect for a chilly October morning; I enjoy dipping a Gingersnapper into it for maximum spice deliciousness (and I’m usually not a dipper – soggy crumbs in my tea?! Blech!).
* Organic & Pure Cinnamon Chai with Rooibus tea. I haven’t tried this one, but it looked so autumnal that I had to grab a box!
* Bayfield no-sugar-added apple butter. Yummy locally-made apple butter!
* A stash of Larabars. I went with vaguely fall-ish (or perhaps just holiday-ish) flavors: Pecan Pie, Apple Pie, Gingersnap, Carrot Cake, and Banana Bread.
* Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons. I wanted to include a cookbook, and Nava Atlas’ delightful collection of soups and stews seemed perfect! The section with recipes for fall are chock full of squash, lentils, taters, and all sorts of hearty, filling ingredients. Mmm!

The logistics:

To enter, simply comment and let me know your favorite thing about fall. If you don’t have a blog that’s linked in your comment, please leave an e-mail address so I can get in contact with you!

For an extra entry, mention the giveaway on your blog and then come back here and leave another comment.

I’ll randomly select a winner on Wednesday, 15th October at 7:00 PM CST.

As ever, thanks for reading! Good luck! :)

Alert, alert! Giveaway: your input needed!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold the presses! It’s nearly October?! When did that happen? April may be the cruellest month (and that’s debatable), but September sure feels like the shortest. I know people (including me) say that all the time, but honestly? September flew by like a hummingbird on speed.

And that means that October fast approacheth. And that means that my one-year veganiversary fast approacheth!  I made the “official” switch to veganism on the first of October last year, just in time for VeganMoFo. I’d essentially been vegan for a while, but I came out of the closet, went public, and stopped with the very occasional consumption of eggs or dairy (which had mostly been to appease people and not make waves).

As I’ve said recently, making the official switch was by far one of my best decisions. So I’d like to celebrate! And what better way than by embracing my inner hobbit and giving away presents to all you wonderful folks? I haven’t yet decided what I should give away, so here’s the fun part – you can tell me! Do you like giveaways with food as the prize? A cookbook? An eclectic mix of fun ephemera? Let me know! I’ll take all your input into consideration and have the official giveaway post up in a week or so. :)

And just so this isn’t a text-only post, here’s a photo of some cookies.

Choco-chippers!

I’m pretty sure this was from a more successful attempt at making Dreena’s cookies than that last time I tried ’em… hehe.

Cute&Crafty Alert: Chirp Cards!

Three things I love, in no particular order:

1. Veganism/being vegan/vegans in general
2. Craftiness and all things DIY
3. Giveaways (more specifically, winning giveaways)

With that in mind, I ask you this: what could possibly be more up my vegan alley than winning a giveaway of two adorable, crafty cards handmade by a fellow vegan? Yeah, that’s what I thought – nada! I was absolutely tickled pink when I won Celine‘s giveaway last weekend. She graciously purchased two cards of my choice from Amy‘s brand spankin’ new Etsy store, Chirp Cards. I chose the Little Pink Piggy and Night Owls cards, because really, who can resist pigs and owls?! Not this girl.

Just look at that adorable lil pig with his adorable lil apple core!

Amy sent the cards post-haste, all wrapped up in a cute little package with a handwritten note and two envelopes made from recycled paper. The cards are super sturdy, able to withstand a heavy dose of ink. I’ve already sent one off to my bestest friend, who recently moved to Syracuse. :)

Amy’s craftiness has inspired me to start including some of my own DIY endeavors on my blog. I have an Etsy shop, but it’s painfully empty at the moment. I think it’s time to fill ‘er up. In the meantime, go check out Amy’s shop and support a fellow vegan!

Thanks for hosting the giveaway, Celine!

Giveaway Winner Time!

Hey, everyone! I just got back from a wonderful – if chilly – bike ride with my mama, and now it’s time to announce the winner of my Papa Tofu giveaway! Although I considered using one of those random number generators, since I didn’t have that many entries I decided it’d be much more fun to physically pick the winning name out of a hat. So I grabbed a piece of scrap paper and got to work! I put all the names into my trusty hand-knitted Jayne hat, shook ’em up, and drew a piece o’ paper…

A winner is you!

My first giveaway winner is Lindsay from Cooking for a Vegan Lover! Congrats! I’ll be emailing you soon for your mailing address.

Thanks to everyone who entered! I can’t wait to host another giveaway in the future. :)

World Vegan Day + a GIVEAWAY!

Happy World Vegan Day, everyone! I’m celebrating this awesome day and the end of MoFo by hosting my first ever giveaway!

I have to say, the stars must’ve been aligning to lead me to the delicious world of veganism, because recently I’ve won quite a few giveaways. First I won my spiralizer from Katie. Then I won a copy of Jennifer Cornbleet’s Raw For Dessert from Vegan Visitor, followed by a fun selection of vegan smoothie and drink mixes from Pixiepine. Finally, I just saw that I won one of the awesome MoFo-inspired handmade keychains from Vessels and Wares. Add to that the various cookbooks I’ve won by responding to various Tweets quickly, and I’m beginning to realize that I’m a lucky little vegan! I’m not used to ever winning these sorts of random drawings, so this is exciting and strange.

Anyway, now it’s time for me to share something with all of you! In honor of Kittee from the fantastic Cake Maker to the Stars, I’m going to be giving away a copy of her cookzine, Papa Tofu. Kittee put together the master list of MoFo participants and generally helped make it a truly awesome Month o’ Food, so I thought it’d be nice to give away her zine. I felt like I’d completed some sort of vegan rite of passage when I ordered two copies from Herbivore! Although I haven’t gotten them in yet, I’ve wanted to get my hands on this hot little zine for a while now. Kittee has lots of great many recipes and helpful info over at PakuPaku, and she promises that Papa Tofu “is designed to be a handy-dandy “best of” print edition. Something you can slap on the counter, while you run to see if you’ve got enough shortening left to make frosting.” Umm, sounds good to me! And I’m probably going to throw a few extra treats into the box when I mail this out, but I haven’t decided what they’ll be yet. ;)

I nabbed this photo from Herbivore.

This contest is super easy to enter. Just leave a comment telling me the most delicious thing you’ve eaten today. You can earn an additional two entries by blogging and/or Tweeting about the contest. Just come back here and leave another comment for each extra entry. The giveaway will end on Wednesday, November 11th. Good luck!

Giveaway Madness

Hey folks!

I wish I had some yummy food photos to share today, but unfortunately the batch of Orange Glazed Scones I baked last night didn’t last long enough for that. The recipe is from Vegan with a Vengeance, and overall I was quite pleased with the results. The scones were quite fluffy and cakelike, and I appreciated just how much they rose during the baking process. I thought the glaze tasted a little too Earth Balance-y, but nobody else had any complaints so maybe I’m just strange.

So in lieu of food photos, I’m just going to mention a couple of fantastic giveaways going on in the blog world right now. Leslie of Leslie Loves Veggies is teaming up with Nature’s Path to give away a generous gift package of Nature’s Path products. Check it out here.

If you’re in more of a dessert mood, check out Gina’s Love Force giveaway at Vegan Strong. She’s offering up five Love Force bars to one lucky winner, so go enter thyself!

And if those weren’t tempting enough, Jessie is giving away – wait for it – a Vita-Mix! I know that many of you are already happy Vita-Mix owners, but I can’t yet count myself amongst your numbers. So I’m crossing my fingers and toes and hoping to win this contest!

Good luck to all of you! I’ll be back tomorrow for Raw Wednesday. Ciao!

Breakfast, CCK Style

I love breakfast.

I know, who doesn’t, right? But all through high school and most of college, breakfast definitely didn’t get much love from me, except on the weekends when my dad might make a big batch of pancakes. I wasn’t much of a morning person, and in high school I was guilty of breaking my fast on whatever I could shove down my gob in the least amount of time, much to my disapproving mom’s chagrin. Actually, I usually brought my food to school and downed a bagel during my Academic Decathlon homeroom (nerd alert!) before classes started in earnest. In college, I rarely ate breakfast at all until last year, when I lived in a townhouse and had my own kitchen. Not having to get up, get dressed, and trek to the dining hall changed the way I approached breakfast, especially during the frigid Minnesota winter! I have grown to love and appreciate breakfast, and now I never skip it. From pancakes to potato-laden brekkie burritos, I love me my mornin’ eats.

I especially love all things oatmeal, and that’s one reason I’ve always had a soft spot for [Chocolate Covered] Katie and her blog, even back in the days when I was blogging over at Blogspot. Her oatmeal creations are inspired and inspirational! When you can have Brownie Batter for breakfast, who wouldn’t?! Especially when your breakfast creations look like this:

Brownie Batter Oat Bran for brekkie!

My unfortunate lack of an immersion blender means I can’t quite pull off her blended grains technique, but whatever, man – my Bob’s Red Mill oat bran tasted scrumptious enough without being blended! Plus, my Brownie Batter Oat Bran was super brain food for my daily GRE study session.

But I didn’t stop there. Oh no, my love for dessert-for-breakfast fueled me to greater heights of sweet breakfast euphoria when I made Snickerdoodle Oat Bran, a variation of Katie’sSnickerdoodle Hot Cereal!

Snickerdoodle yumminess!

Cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla gave this bowl a flavor totally reminiscent of the snickerdoodles I made a few days ago.

This morning, I ended my trifecta of CCK-inspired breakfasts by coming up with one of my own. I call it… Apple Pie Oat Bran! This “recipe” is super easy and involves one of my favorite ways of eating apples, even those banged-up, bruised, sad-looking ones that sit dolefully in your fruit bowl for days waiting to be used. I’m kind of guesstimating on the measurements here, because I really don’t measure much except my oat bran and milk.

Apple Pie for breakfast...

Apple Pie Oat Bran
Ingredients:
1 apple + cinnamon and sugar to taste
1 cup water or your favorite nondairy milk (I mix half water with half soy or almond milk)
1/3 cup oat bran (I use Bob’s Red Mill)
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp nutmeg

First, chop up your apple into small cubes and put ’em in a small bowl. Liberally douse the suckers with sugar and cinnamon and let the apples sit and macerate for a while until they become nice and juicy. Then start making your oat bran. Start heating your liquid of choice along with the vanilla, and once it’s boiling add the oat bran. Keep a bonny eye on your oa tbran, stirring fairly often, for one minute. Add about 3/4 of your macerated apple mixture and keep on cookin’ for another minute. Then turn off the heat, add the cinnamon and nutmeg, and remove your pot from the heat. Unless you’re impatient like me, you probably want to let your oat bran cool a for a couple of minutes before pouring it into a bowl, but once you’ve done that, top the oat bran with the rest of your apple mixture, give it all another sprinkle of cinnamon, and you’re good to go! (Also, feel free to sub oat bran with your breakfast cereal of choice.)

Oh, helpful tip – I like to keep a premade cinnamon sugar mixture in a repurposed spice jar so I have it ready at all times; it’s quite convenient. ;)

Now, while these breakfasts are completely worthy of a devotional post such as this one, I also have an ulterior motive in baring my love for dessert-like breakfasts to the world. Katie is
giving away a spiralizer, and she’s generously offering up six extra entries to anyone who blogs about one of her recipes. But even if you don’t have a blog, you can still enter by checking out her contest. Thanks, Katie!

Happy Herbivore’s Fit Soul, Fit Body Giveaway

I’m sure everyone knows this already, but Lindsay over at Happy Herbivore is giving away a copy of Brant Secunda’s and Mark Allen’s Fit Soul, Fit Body. Now, I obviously haven’t read the book myself, but the authors approach physical fitness via spiritual fitness. Here’s a snippet of what their website says about the book:

Let’s face it: fitness goes far beyond how long it takes to walk or run a mile. When you’re stressed out, emotionally drained, overworked, overweight, and underappreciative of your physical body, you can’t get much of anything accomplished—at work, at home, on the race track, wherever and in whichever capacity. Put simply, when you’re spiritually unfit, life is a greater challenge. That mythical “balance” you’ve always dreamed of achieving us just that—a myth. But not any more.

Makes sense to me. And since my blog is all about cultivating a healthy mind in a healthy body, adding a healthy soul creates the trifecta of ultimate healthiness. :) So head on over to Happy Herbivore’s contest post and enter to win! Or don’t, and give me a better chance of winning the book… hehe. I jest. Seriously, go check it out.
