Survey Thursday!

Orange rectangular banner that says "Vegan MoFo" and "Vegan Month of Food 2011."

I knew this would happen sooner or later! It’s time to cash in my Get Out of Jail Free card and take… a survey. Dun dun dunnn! But I’m going to do a new one, not the same one that’s been floating around the internet since MoFo began. So… yeah. :) On to the questions!

A is for Avocado: How do you like yours prepared?

Oh please. As if there’s any other way than in a beautifully simple guacamole!

B is for Bread: Regardless of nutrition, what is your favorite type?

Rye! Or pumpernickel! Basically anything flavorful and crusty. But really, it’s all good.

C is for Chocolate: What is your favorite kind currently?

Anything darker than, say 70%. I had a Chocolove Almond and Sea Salt in Dark Chocolate a few weeks ago, and I’ve been thinking it out ever since.

D is for Doughnuts: You might not currently eat them, but what kind do you fancy?

I haven’t had a doughnut in years! In my pre-vegan days, I was a Dunkin’ Donuts glazed donut kind of girl. Oh, for that sugary sweet stickiness…

E is for Egg(plant): How would you like yours prepared?

How about in a vegan eggplant parmesan? Or in a sandwich with basil, tomatoes, and vegan mozzarella?

F is for Falafel: Yay or nay?

YAY!

G is for Groceries: Where do you purchase yours?

Mostly at the Willy St. Co-op. I go to Woodman’s occasionally; they have a really decent selection of vegan/”natural” foods at cheap prices. I hit up Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods every couple months, and Copps when I’m really in a pinch – it’s but a five-minute walk from my apartment.

H is for Hot Beverages: What is your favorite hot drink?

Oh dear. It’s a toss-up between straight-up dark black coffee and tea… nearly any kind of tea.

I is for Ice Cream: Pick a favorite flavor and add a fun topping.

Umm… chocolate peanut butter cup with hot fudge. Maybe that’s not a very fun topping, but it’s classic.

J is for Jams or Jellies: Do you eat them? If so, what kind and flavor?

My current favorite is Crofter’s organic Morello cherry jam. Oh man, it has these great cherry bits and super delicious intense cherry flavor… and it’s often on sale at the aforementioned co-op!

K is for Kashi: Name your favorite Kashi product?

Probably their Pumpkin Flax Plus granola. I’m also learning to enjoy the Red Berry Crunch Flax Plus cereal; it’s reminiscent of other cereals that feature freeze-dried strawberries, but it’s not too sweet, which I love.

L is for Lunch: What was/is yours today?

Happy Herbivore’s Eggless Salad in a pita pocket and a Starkrimson pear.

M is for microwave: What is your favorite microwave meal/snack?

I don’t actually own a microwave! If I did, I’d go for microwaved popcorn. Not the kind you buy in a gross buttery bag but the kind you make yourself, where you just put kernels in a paper bag, fold over the top, and pop it in the microwave!

N is for nutrients: Do you like carbs, fats, or proteins best?

What a cruel question. At the end of the day, I guess I’d go for carbs.

O is for oil: What kind do you like to use?

Extra-virgin olive oil is my standby. I also like coconut oil.

P is for protein: How do you get yours?

Oh please. I get it everywhere!

Q is for Quaker: How do you like your oats?

Ideally, cooked on the stove (with almond milk, not water – ick!) and immersion blended to creamy bliss with lots of spices. Realistically, cooked in the microwave at work. I always make it with almond milk and a little hot water, and I add dried cranberries.

R is for roasting: What is your favorite thing to roast?

Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Also potatoes.

S is for sandwich: What’s your favorite kind?

Oh gosh. Anything packed with veggies and featuring avocados.

T is for travel: How do you handle eating while traveling?

I always bring lots of snacks, I do my research beforehand, and I look for Asian restaurants in a pinch.

U is for unique: What are some of the unique foods that you like?

Meh, I don’t know. I feel like many vegan stapes are “unique” in that omnivores think they’re weird. I like them all. :)

V is for vitamins: What kind do you take?

I take a sublingual liquid B12 supplement every couple of days, and I take a vegan vitamin D2 pill when I remember. :)

W is for Wiener schnitzel: Do you ever recreate this traditional Czech food?

Never have I ever… yet?!

Have you taken this survey? I want to read your answers!

Saturday Survey!

Hey-o! Suddenly it’s nearly seven in the evening and I’ve yet to even think about a MoFo post. What does that mean? It’s survey time! Imma do one of the original MoFo surveys, because I filled out the 2010 version already.

1. Favorite non-dairy milk?

Almond! Generally Almond Breeze, but I’ll admit it – I like Silk’s version, too.

2. What are the top 3 dishes/recipes you are planning to cook?

I’m getting ready to dive into Viva Vegan! tomorrow, and I’m pretty excited. But I’m not going to share exactly what I’m planning to make, because that would ruin the surprise!

3. Topping of choice for popcorn?

I really freakin’ love kettle corn.

4. Most disastrous recipe/meal failure?

Geeze… I don’t know. I tried making some apple bread from scratch once, and it was just weeeird. I hadn’t figured out the science of baked goods at that point.

5. Favorite pickled item?

Uh. Cucumbers. I’m not really a fan of any other pickled things… it’s that whole aversion to vinegar, y’know?

6. How do you organize your recipes?

Well, there’s my infamous “Crap I Want to Make” Pages document, in which I store terribly-organized links to bloggy recipes. Then I tend to use tiny bits of paper as placeholders for recipes that catch my fancy while I’m reading through a cookbook, which inevitably means that my cookbooks have bits of paper between every page. Heh.

7. Compost, trash, or garbage disposal?

Here in my apartment, trash, recycling, and garbage disposal. I composted a bit during the summer when I could sneakily bring things to the compost bin at the garden, but now that’s not available. :(

8. If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 foods…what would they be (don’t worry about how you’ll cook them)?

How dare you. Umm. Dark chocolate… kale… peanut butter? I detest this question.

9. Fondest food memory from your childhood?

Every Christmas morning we ate cinnamon buns and grapefruits. Still do, actually; last year my mommy made vegan cinnamon buns and they were out of this world.

10. Favorite vegan ice cream?

I’ve really only tried a few, but Coconut Bliss is the shizz.

11. Most loved kitchen appliance?

Oy. I don’t really have many fancy-pants appliances right now, sooo… my stove. Hahah.

12. Spice/herb you would die without?

Cumin!

13. Cookbook you have owned for the longest time?

I have an American Girl cookbook back home somewhere. Hmm – when I go back to my parents’ house for Christmas, I should totally dig it out and veganize some of the recipes!

14. Favorite flavor of jam/jelly?

Cherry, maybe? Or apricot?

15. Favorite vegan recipe to serve to an omni friend?

Let’s be honest – any decadent baked good will do.

16. Seitan, tofu, or tempeh?

Tofu; I’m boring.

17. Favorite meal to cook (or time of day to cook)?

I love baking. As for time of day, I like afternoon cookery, but I’m only home in the afternoon on weekends, alas.

18. What is sitting on top of your refrigerator?

A glass serving plate, a giant tin of sesame sticks, a martini shaker, a ridiculous cow-udder shot glass, and vodka.

19. Name 3 items in your freezer without looking.

A big ol’ bag of cherry tomatoes I froze during the summer, kale I also froze during the summer, and tons of frozen baked goods!

20. What’s on your grocery list?

I just went grocery shopping! Umm… still need some EB and vanilla, though.

21. Favorite grocery store?

Woodman’s. I love its lack of fanciness and its surprisingly large stock of organic/natural/vegan-friendly foods.

22. Name a recipe you’d love to veganize, but haven’t yet.

I want to work on some of the traditional Portuguese recipes my Grammy and Vava used to make when I was a kid.

23. Food blog you read the most (besides Isa’s because I know you check it everyday). Or maybe the top 3?

Oh pshaw. I love you all!

24. Favorite vegan candy/chocolate?

Okay, I’m a boring purist type person – I really only indulge in dark chocolate!

25. Most extravagant food item purchased lately?

If we’re talking price, I bought a bottle of applejack brandy the other day. IT’S BEEN A ROUGH WEEK; DON’T JUDGE.

…dude, I filled out this survey last year, too. Aaand most of my answers haven’t changed, although there’s 200% more alcohol in this post. SRSLY DON’T JUDGE.

Yay; hooray; that was fun… but this post is lacking something visual that’s not too abysmal. How about a stack of fluffy, whole wheat pancakes? I’ll post the recipe for these babies soon, but for now you can just look at them in all their fluffy, puffy glory.

They're stacked.

P.S. Lest you think it was sunny and warm today, it wasn’t. This is an old, previously-unseen photo. It was grey and rainy and cold… all the better to get a head start on my holiday knitting! Woohoo!

How’s the weather where you live? What did you do today?

Servin’ up a Survey, MoFo Style

Day two = finished! Today’s eats were so pathetic that I can barely talk about them. I didn’t take/get/have/whatever a lunch break, so I basically snacked every once in a while to stave off hunger. For dinner, I thought I’d be a genius and go to the grocery store and pick up some [more] snacks and a frozen meal or something, but just as I discovered Kroger’s fairly impressive selection of various vegan eats, I remembered that my room at the Hampton Inn is microwaveless. Har har haaaaar. I picked up some Back to Nature granola and Kashi cereal bars, and plan on making it a fully snackified day. Yeehaw.

Anyway, Keri over at I Eat Trees posted a fun MoFo-inspired survey, so Imma fill it out, and you should do the same!

What is one food you thought you’d miss when you went vegan, but don’t?
This is super unoriginal, but I really have to say cheese! It probably helped that I mostly gave up cheese before officially going vegan, so then the few times I did eat it during that time period, I realized that it really wasn’t tH3 gR3@t3$t th!nG 3v3R!1!!111!! Now, I only miss it very occasionally.

What is a food or dish you wouldn’t touch as a child, but enjoy now?
Gosh… anything with sweet potatoes or squash. I KNOW. Now I LOVE sweet potatoes, and am much fonder of squash.

What vegan dish or food you feel like you “should” like, but don’t?
Bananas. Also, Daiya.

What beverage do you consume the most of on any given day?
Water!

What dish are you “famous” for making or bringing to gatherings?
Geeze… any sort of dessert, really.

Do you have any self-imposed food rules (like no food touching on the plate or no nuts in sweets)?
I hate raisins in baked goods. Hate, hate, hate!

What’s one food or dish you tend to eat too much of when you have it in your home?
Umm… anything sweet, really!

What ingredient or food do you prefer to make yourself despite it being widely available prepackaged?
Hmm. Baked goods? Most people these days buy packaged desserts or mixes…

What ingredient or food is worth spending the extra money to get “the good stuff”?
I don’t mind paying a little extra for organics. I don’t really buy “cheap” food… it’s my one weakness, ‘cuz otherwise I’m not much of a spender!

Are you much of a snacker?  What are your favorite snacks?
Yes. Everything.

What are your favorite vegan pizza toppings?
Black olives, artichoke hearts, banana peppers, my dad’s awesome spice blend/spread dealio.

What is your favorite vegetable?  Fruit?
So difficult! Brussels sprouts, maybe?! And grapefruit. Or mango.

What is the best salad dressing?
I rarely use salad dressing, actually. But I do like sesame-ginger.

What is your favorite thing to put on toasted bread?
A delicious all-fruit jam.

What kind of soup do you most often turn to on a chilly day or when you aren’t feeling your best?
I like pureed squash soups, although recently I’ve been making my own miso soup.

What is your favorite cupcake flavor? Frosting flavor?
Umm… anything with chocolate!

What is your favorite kind of cookie?
See above.

What is your most-loved “weeknight meal”?
What a question! My weeknight meals tend to be fairly simple. I miss the big ol’ mess of sauteed veggies I made all summer long with my CSA yumminess… :(

What is one dish or food you enjoy, but can’t get anyone else in your household to eat?
Umm… I live with a roommate, and we cook separately. Plus I think she’d eat anything I made, unless it had tons of mushrooms!

How long, in total,  do you spend in the kitchen on an average day? Well, on weekdays I only make dinner at home, but then again I do tend to bake fairly often. So maybe an hour or two on week days, and three or four (or more) on weekend days?

How many fingers am I holding up? Eleven, apparently!

Your turn! :)

That VeganMoFo Meme (you know what I’m talkin’ about!)

Although I didn’t want to resort to doing this so early in the month, my posting plans for tonight were thrown off kilter for a variety of reasons, so today I’m going to fill out that oh-so-popular meme that’s been taking MoFo blogs by storm and was created by Whoa Wren. It’s like a “get out of jail free” card for VeganMoFo, y’know? Shameless, but whatevs. So here ’tis.

1. Favorite non-dairy milk?
Probably Almond Breeze Unsweetened Vanilla… I’ve not tried hemp or oat milk yet, but I will!

2. What are the top 3 dishes/recipes you are planning to cook?
Umm… I know I’m going to make the Ancho Lentil Soup with Grilled Pineapple soon, because that shyte is de-frickin-licious. Other than that, I’ll definitely resort to my “Crap I Want to Make” document when I need inspiration. ;)

3. Topping of choice for popcorn?
I’m a kettle corn kind of girl – that salty/sweet juxtaposition gets me every time.

4. Most disastrous recipe/meal failure?
In recent memory, I’d have to go with the big Lemony French Cake debacle, although I managed to salvage it fairly well.

5. Favorite pickled item?
Okay, confession time – I’m not a huge fan of pickled things, mostly because I don’t like anything that tastes strongly of vinegar. So I’d have to go with those lightly pickled cucumbers you get at certain homestyle restaurants… yum.

6. How do you organize your recipes?
They’re in virtual form in my aforementioned “Crap I Want to Make” document on the computer, and in solid form on index cards.

7. Compost, trash, or garbage disposal?
All three, plus recycling, of course!

8. If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 foods…what would they be (don’t worry about how you’ll cook them)?
Oh dear. Umm, dark chocolate, lemon poppy seed muffins (is that cheating?!), and mangoes.

9. Fondest food memory from your childhood?
I have wonderful memories of Christmas morning; after waking our parents up at the crack of dawn, we’d be allowed to open our stockings before eating breakfast, which was always grapefruits and cinnamon buns. Heh.

10. Favorite vegan ice cream?
I’ve not tried very many yet, but the chocolate-hazelnut variety of Coconut Bliss is ridiculously delicious. Super unhealthy, though, so it’s really a treat.

11. Most loved kitchen appliance?
My blender, fo’ sho’. I lurve my Green Monsters.

12. Spice/herb you would die without?
I’m debating between cumin and cinnamon… and cayenne… oh boy. Um, anything that begins with a ‘c’? :D

13. Cookbook you have owned for the longest time?
I only got my first cookbooks (VWAV and VCTOTW) last Christmas!

14. Favorite flavor of jam/jelly?
Probably apricot.

15. Favorite vegan recipe to serve to an omni friend?
Any sort of spicy, bean ‘n veggie laden chili always goes over well.

16. Seitan, tofu, or tempeh?
Aiii eee ooo, killer tofuuu!

17. Favorite meal to cook (or time of day to cook)?
I end up doing most of my baking in the evening, although late afternoon dinner making can also be delightful.

18. What is sitting on top of your refrigerator?
Nothing. My parents redid the kitchen about two years ago and my mom is kinda crazy about keeping it clean now.

19. Name 3 items in your freezer without looking.
The aforementioned Coconut Bliss ice cream, some sort of veggie burger, and ice. ;)

20. What’s on your grocery list?
Pineapple, ancho chilies, and some sort of non-dairy milk.

21. Favorite grocery store?
Trader Joe’s fo’ sho’.

22. Name a recipe you’d love to veganize, but haven’t yet.
I guess I’d like to try my hand at a mac ‘n cheese…

23. Food blog you read the most (besides Isa’s because I know you check it everyday). Or maybe the top 3?
FatFree Vegan Kitchen, Chocolate-Covered Katie, and Happy Herbivore, although I read most blogs equally often now that I’ve discovered the wonders of Google Reader!

24.Favorite vegan candy/chocolate?
Just give me a super dark chocolate and I’m a happy Vegga!

25. Most extravagant food item purchased lately?
I dunno. The Coconut Bliss would fall under this category if I hadn’t had a coupon for a free pint, though!

26. Ingredients you are scared to work with?
I’m a little nervous about trying my hand at making seitan, but I wouldn’t say I’m scared of anything!

…okay, whew, that took longer than expected! I hope everyone fills this thing out, because I enjoy reading other people’s answers. :)
